Assisi as World Heritage Site

The small city on Monte Subasio was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 2000. The original character of the temple city has been protected over the centuries. The city wall, the medieval cityscape and the fortress ruins Rocca Maggiore are in very good condition. Besides the historic city center, UNESCO named the basilica San Francesco and other Franciscan pilgrimage destinations (Santa Chiara, San Rufino, Chiesa Nuova, Santa Maria Maggiore, Eremo delle Carceri, San Damiano...) world heritage sites. They are important testimonies of art history and influenced art and architecture decisively.

Saint Francis as the Patron Saint of the Italians

Every year on October 4th, Italians celebrate their patron saint San Francesco d'Assisi. He is among the most beloved national saints due to his humble and poor lifestyle according to the example of Jesus Christ. His body is located in the basilica. Thousands of religious pilgrims come to this place every year.

The Greatest Masterpieces of Important Artists

Besides its importance as a Christian place of worship, Assisi enjoys a worldwide reputation for its collection of extraordinary art pieces. The artists Simone Martini, Giotto and Cimabue created their greatest masterpieces here. In the upper church of the Basilica San Francesco, frescoes from Giotto and Cimabue testify to the life of the saint. The lower church is Roman and also houses frescoes of the artists. Besides Francis, Assisi possesses another patron saint: the Basilica di Santa Chiara is dedicated to Saint Chiara.
