The Arena Sferisterio is Inviting you to the 54th Opera Festival
Today, the neoclassic arena from the years 1819 to 1829 can hold up to 4.000 viewers. The design was created by the architect Ireneo Aleandri, who was also responsible for building the Theatro Feronia in San Severino Marche. In 1921 Verdi’s “Aida” was staged for the first time in the Sferisterio Arena. 70,000 people watched the spectacle over seventeen evenings, which was set forth the following year with the opera Ponchielli’s “La Gioconda.” It was quiet for 45 years in the traditional arena until “Otello” and Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” brought the festival back to life in 1967. This year visitors of the “Macerata Opera Festival” look forward to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte,” Gaetano Donizetti’s “L'elisir d'amore” and Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata.”
